Tutorial #24 - Putting Your Pages on the Web
- Lesson #24: Putting Your Pages on the Web. Before you can put your web files on the Internet, you will need a web server to host them on. If you don't know what a web server is, or if you need help finding one, click here for more info. For the rest of this tutorial, we will assume that you already have a server to upload your files to. Click the play button to begin the tutorial.
- We will use Internet Explorer’s FTP (File Transfer Protocol) feature to upload our files to the web server.
- While this method should work in most situations, your particular web host may have special considerations. You may need to refer to those instructions also.
- We'll start by highlighting the current address.
- Then we'll type ftp. into the address bar.
- Don't forget the dot after ftp.
- Now, we will need to enter the domain name, and extension of our website.
- Important note: When you are ready to upload your files to your website, you will need to enter your own domain name and proper extension, instead of using this generic example.
- Now that our FTP address has been typed into the address bar, we can click on Go.
- You should get a box for entering your User Name and Password.
- This is just an example. Be sure to use the unique user name and password that you have for your own hosting account.
- Now we can click on Log On, to access our web server.
- What you see in this window will depend on how your web host has setup your account.
- On this example web server, our website files should go in the directory called public_html. Of course, it may be different on your web server.
- Be sure to check with your hosting service, as to where your files should go.
- What's nice about this FTP client is that it supports drag and drop. Let's open our web folder next to this window, and see how easy uploading our files can be.
- To upload our entire website at once, we'll highlight all of our files and folders, by pressing Ctrl + A on the keyboard.
- Now we can just drag our files over to the public_html folder.
- That was pretty simple. In the future, you can add or update files using this same method.
- Be sure to test your website online, as soon as possible after any upload. You’ll want to make sure that all your links work, and that all your images are displayed.
